💬 Common questions

Frequent questions, quick answers

Everything most people ask before they sign up.

Is the CLI really free?
Yes — always, and no account is required for local work. The CLI, MCP server, and local presentation engine are free forever. You can create, preview, and build presentations locally with no signup and no limits.
What are AI credits?
Credits are consumed only when you use our cloud AI servers to generate or edit slides. 1 credit = 1 AI action (slide edit, generation, etc.). A full deck generation runs about 4 credits. If you bring your own API key, no credits are consumed at all.
What is BYOK?
Bring Your Own Key. Paste your Anthropic or OpenAI API key into Settings and all AI features work using your key — bypassing credit usage entirely on any tier, including Free. You pay the AI provider directly at their published rates.
Can viewers see my deck without an account?
Yes. Published decks open instantly in any browser — phone, tablet, laptop, conference-room projector — with no sign-up required to view. Just share the link.
Can I self-host?
Absolutely. Run deckhost build to extract clean, static HTML you can host anywhere — Netlify, S3, GitHub Pages, your own server. The hosted service is a convenience, not a requirement.
What happens when I run out of AI credits?
You don't hit a wall. Pro and Team plans have pay-as-you-go overage at $0.08/credit and $0.06/credit respectively. There's a safety cap at 2–3× your monthly allowance to prevent runaway spend.
What happens when I hit the deck limit?
You can still use the CLI locally for unlimited presentations. The limit only applies to decks published on deckhost.com. Upgrade to Pro for 100 published decks, or Team for unlimited.
